Alfred Fettes
Idealistic and naïve, Alfred
Fettes wants to use his knowledge of anatomy to make people's lives better. But
he finds his work - sourcing and preparing cadavers for Dr Knox - more and more
distressing and becomes increasingly concerned about where these bodies are coming
from. |
 |
Janet
Brown
Poor and destitute, Janet exists by wandering the streets with
her friend Mary Patterson, and begging for food and money. It is a sad and bitter
life, which is frequently put in peril by the violence of the streets and bitingly
cold winter weather. |
 |
William
(Toddy) MacFarlane
Wealthy, worldly-wise and self-assured, William MacFarlane
is the young junior doctor who initiates the novice student, Alfred Fettes, in
the grisly tasks that Dr Knox requires of him. |
 |
Isabella
Knox
Dr Knox's daughter is stunningly beautiful and alluring. Wherever
she goes, she is followed by a trail of admirers, most of them studying medicine
with her father. |
 |
John
Gray
A menacing and threatening character who makes his living digging
up corpses for Dr Knox to dissect. He is well paid for his work, and he supplements
this modest income with a little blackmail and thuggery. |
 |
Mary
Patterson
Her life may have been hard and miserable but any life is
precious. However, sadly Mary is worth more to someone dead than she is alive.
